Drawing a cat step-by-step is a fun way to practice sketching different shapes and textures. Here’s a simple guide to help you draw a cute, sitting cat.

Step-by-Step Guide to Drawing a Cat

  1. Draw the Head Shape:
    • Start by drawing a circle for the cat’s head. This will help you outline the proportions of the face.
    • Add two small triangles on top of the circle for the cat’s ears. Position them at a slight angle to make the ears look natural.
  2. Sketch the Face Guidelines:
    • Draw a vertical line down the center of the head to help position the eyes and nose symmetrically.
    • Add a horizontal line slightly below the center of the circle for the placement of the eyes.
  3. Draw the Eyes and Nose:
    • Draw two almond-shaped eyes on either side of the vertical guideline. Leave some space between them.
    • Below the eyes, draw a small upside-down triangle for the nose, centered on the vertical line.
    • Add small curved lines above the eyes for the eyebrows, and short lines below for the lower part of the eyes.
  4. Draw the Mouth and Whiskers:
    • Draw two curved lines extending from the bottom of the nose, creating a small “W” shape to form the mouth.
    • Add a few straight lines extending outwards from the sides of the face to represent the cat’s whiskers.
  5. Outline the Ears:
    • Add inner ear details by drawing smaller triangles within the larger ear shapes, following their angle.
    • You can also add a few curved lines inside to suggest fur texture.
  6. Draw the Body:
    • Sketch an oval shape below the head for the body of the cat. Make sure the oval is slightly larger than the head and positioned vertically.
    • Connect the head and the body with two short curved lines to create the neck.
  7. Add the Legs and Paws:
    • Draw two curved lines extending downward from the bottom of the body for the front legs. Add small rounded shapes at the bottom for the paws.
    • For the back legs, draw two curved lines that start from the sides of the body and bend forward, with paws slightly overlapping the front legs.
  8. Draw the Tail:
    • Draw a long, curved shape extending from the back of the body to create the tail. Make it slightly thicker at the base and taper towards the tip.
    • You can make the tail straight, curved, or even fluffy, depending on the style you want.
  9. Add Fur Details:
    • Draw short, jagged lines around the body, neck, and tail to indicate fur. Add more lines for fluffiness around the cheeks and tail.
  10. Outline and Refine:
    • Go over your sketch with a darker pencil or pen to outline the cat, emphasizing the lines you want to keep.
    • Erase any unnecessary guidelines to clean up the drawing.
  11. Shade and Add Final Details:
    • Add shading under the cat’s body, around the eyes, inside the ears, and on the paws to create depth and dimension.
    • You can add small dots above the mouth for whisker roots and some texture around the fur.
  12. Color (Optional):
    • If you want, use colored pencils or markers to color in the cat. Choose colors for the fur, eyes, and nose, and add any patterns like stripes or spots.

Tips:

  • Expression: Adjust the size and shape of the eyes and mouth to give the cat different expressions, like playful, curious, or sleepy.
  • Texture: Use varying line thickness and direction to create different textures of fur.
  • Pose: Try different poses, like a stretching or curled-up cat, for more practice.
